The medieval urban plan of the city is still visible in the small streets which start in the squares of Sant' Adoeno, of the Cathedral, S. Matteo or in the Piazzetta, where the market was held.
Small enclosed streets, with houses built on top of each other, especially around the Castle, are all that remains of the medieval city. This was built in the eleventh century and was organised around three churches: S. Adoeno, S. Matteo and S. Nicolò di Porta Ensita.
